Take an imaginary piece of paper and divide it into two columns: label one side "yes" and the other side "no." This blog will, from time to time, consider the many reasons women and men get married, and whether, for you, this is a valid reason or not. Of course, nearly everyone would like to marry for LOVE. But, failing that, people marry for money, loneliness, etc., and etc. Let's consider what may be the most preposterous reason of all, 'ordering' a bride.
Remember stories of "Mail Order Brides" from America's colonial days? This practice also went on in Alaska when women were scarce in the wilderness. Guess what: the "Mail Order Brides" business is still alive and well! Only these days, it's "E-Mail Order Brides!"
Today I googled 'mail order brides,' just for fun, and found places to go for Russian and Asian women who would like to come to America and get married. This is from GlobalLadies.com: "Ladies of the Global Ladies network are not poverty-stricken, desperately seeking a way out of Russia. They want to find the right man, and you represent everything the Russian man is not: healthy, energetic, financially secure, considerate and sober. They don't want to marry the wrong person any more than you do! Because of health factors, American men have 10 - 15 years cosmetic advantage over their Russian counterparts; furthermore, Russian men historically treat women poorly. Plus, alcoholism is very high among Russian men. So, Russian women are not looking simply for an exit out of Russia. They are "starving" for love and affection and are simply looking to start a family."
This sounds like a really, really good deal for the foreign woman! Who could blame her! What kind of deal is it for the American Man?
Recently I was chatting about this with a friend. Our feelings are that it is SO easy for the American man who is "healthy, energetic, financially secure, considerate and sober" to find an American wife, why would he want to go to the trouble and expense to go abroad? Even if he was only financially secure, he still would have no problems. Perhaps the man who looks online thinks that all foreign women are mellow and mild, would bow to his every wish. Perhaps that man has low self-esteem, may be lazy, ugly, or in a hurry.
I only know one man who went online, then abroad, to find a wife. Let's call them Keller and Tatiana. Keller found Tatiana online, they exchanged a few e-mails and he went to Russia to meet her. She spoke English with a heavy accent. According to the agreement, Keller had two to three weeks to decide whether or not he wanted to marry Tatiana. It took him two days to decide. Later, Tatiana recalled, "He chose me just like he picked out a new car."
Keller is a professional man who makes a better than average salary. Tatiana loves to spend his money, especially on decorating. They have a child that Keller dearly loves but Tatiana tolerates. Tatiana is The Most Negative Person I've Ever Met! Nothing suits her. I suspect she has not even one loving cell in her body! Yes, Tatiana is beautiful but she has such a hard edge, she looks like a witch. Keller is not handsome, but he's not ugly either.
Before he married, Keller never drank alcohol. Now he is an alcoholic.
Tatiana is bullying Keller to bring her mother to America. It will be interesting to see if she succeeds.
